Malta Employers supports call for harsher penalties to safeguard the interests of ethical business

Malta Employers supports the recent call made by the Ombudsman for harsher penalties applicable to irregular developments.

The recommendation is welcome in view of the current situation, across the board, not merely in planning and construction. The predicament is brought about by weak enforcement structures, penalties that are considered low and affordable, and above all a culture that follows a mantra that “Cheaters prosper”.

Law and order and planning of any kind can no longer be hindered by the few who think they are above laws and regulations. No individual should not be allowed to violate the rights of fellow citizens for commercial or any other gain, knowing full well that they will only receive a slap on the wrist.

Upstanding business should no longer suffer the consequences of such unethical behaviour because this severely undermines fair competition, distorts market dynamics, upsets legitimate expectations and ultimately conditions legitimate business and investment opportunities to the detriment of the common good.

Malta Employers and its members expect to operate in an environment where checks and balances function effectively and where the rule of law reigns supreme for one and all.

The role of Government is to enable an environment that facilitates ethical business and investment through a fair and proper enforcement of laws. Government has a moral obligation to maintain a system where success in business or otherwise is not contingent on playing dishonestly.
